Common Questions

What is a janam kundli?

A janam kundli (birth chart) is a map of the sky at the moment of your birth, drawn in the Vedic tradition. It shows the lagna (ascendant) and the positions of the nine grahas — Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu — in the twelve rashis (signs) and nakshatras (lunar mansions).

What is lagna (ascendant)?

Lagna is the rashi rising on the eastern horizon at your birth moment. It changes roughly every two hours, which is why birth time matters so much. In the North Indian chart it sits in the top diamond and sets the layout of all twelve houses.

What is Vimshottari dasha?

Vimshottari is the 120-year planetary period system of Vedic astrology. Your Moon's nakshatra at birth decides which planet's mahadasha (major period) you start life in; each mahadasha divides into antardashas (sub-periods). Your full sequence is shown above with the current period highlighted.

How accurate are these calculations?

Positions are computed in your browser with standard astronomical algorithms and the Lahiri ayanamsa, verified against the Swiss Ephemeris: every graha lands in the correct rashi, typically within a few arc-minutes. If a planet sits very close to a sign boundary we flag it, since the exact sign can depend on precise birth time.

I don't know my exact birth time. What should I do?

Tick “I don't know the time” and the chart uses 12:00 noon as a neutral estimate. The Sun, Jupiter and Saturn positions stay reliable, but treat lagna and the Moon's position as approximate.
